Channeling My Inner Unicorny Mermaid...

Okay, no, I haven't gone and lost my mind and, yes, you did just read that title perfectly - today we're letting the imagination take the wheel as we buckle up and delve into a world of crazy cosmetics that you've probably never thought to explore before...

Now, for a little bit of background before we begin, Unicorn Cosmetics (previously Unicorn Lashes) is a UK based beauty brand started by the wonderful Mel-Blue (in honour of the shocking bright blue hair that once was), striving to break the constant cycle of "samey", unoriginal product releases and actually bring out cosmetics that make you have to do a full on double take.

Therefore, when I was kindly given the opportunity to test out and review some of Mel's wacky creations as press samples, I couldn't have been more excited and, to be honest, that excitement was well-warranted based the aesthetically pleasing nature and overall quality of the products below.

Lady Bug Unicorn Lashes - £9.99
Made from 3D faux silk, these babies are utterly gorgeous and very well suited to my personal tastes when it comes to falsies. I adore the immense length and fluttery edge this pair adds to any eye look and, at the same time, they manage to remain lightweight and soft which is pretty impressive considering the dramatic visible difference. I'm getting to the point where, without these, my eyes feel slightly naked in a weird way, which means I've, for sure, been wooed by the wide-eyed effect this style of lash gives me.

JHEEZ, well, guys, if you aim to turn the most heads and get maximum attention on a night out or at a party, look no further, Blaise Dragon Lashes have 100% got you covered. Admittedly, these are not for the fainted hearted but, if you're a more confident lash wearer, you'll have a field day trying these out accompanied by a sultry, smokey eye - I wore them to a nighttime music festival in my local area and LOVED them. These lashes provide the correct amount of drama and oomph and I can't wait for another occasion to rise that merits such a display - this pair, much like the previous, can be worn up to 15 times, so you won't catch me wasting them anytime soon. Not on your life!

PRO RANGE
So, moving onto the Pro Range, I have two gorgeous face brushes that are vegan and cruelty free (thank GOD), boasting a high quality feel and glamorous appeal with intricate detailing on the ferrule (or "metal bit" if you're not into technical vocabulary - don't worry, that word was new to me too), pastel bristles and an iridescent unicorn handle.

My first impressions of these before putting them to the test on my face? To be honest, I was really impressed because, for me, it's always abundantly clear, based on the amount of work and money the brand is willing to invest into the overall beauty of their products, whether the aim is to a, share something you're passionate about with the public, or b, make easy money. Due to the fact that these inarguably look and feel amazing from the texture of the brush head down to the material used for the wand, I'm definitely able to gage where Mel's intentions lie when it comes to her brand - intricacy and care like this is rare and wonderful to see.

This brush has been serving me really well over the last while for a number of different stages within my makeup routine - it really does live up to it's multipurpose claims. The bristles are so soft (you might think that's an automatic expectation for a brush but, trust me, I've tried some really scratchy ones that feel horrible when in contact with the skin), making it perfect for setting and swiping away powder from the under eye, a much more delicate area that requires a lighter touch. This also does a sound job at providing that BLINDING Summer strobe on the cheekbones, forehead, chin and décolletage (plus every other place on the body, if you're a little highlighter happy like myself) and I wouldn't put it past me to use it for blush application either. Adding this to your holiday makeup bag in order to save space would be a very wise move for quality and versatility at the same time.

015 Cream Dream Angled Brush - £10.00
As I took the photos for this post before using a majority of the products, you won't be able to tell by the state of it but, good lord, I've used this brush to absolute DEATH. For cream contouring, the tightly packed bristles allow for a really smooth blend (sounds like a cup of coffee, I know) that doesn't end up looking muddy or strange but, instead, naturally SNATCHED. It also doesn't pick up a lot of product either, so you don't lose any coverage on your foundation whilst you're buffing in your contour and your girl needs her coverage, so I'm very appreciative of that aspect of the brush - totally worth spending the £10 for this baby.

MERMAID BRUSHES
Now, I'm practically considered a mermaid anyway (I mean, my name... duh), however, now that I walk around flaunting these, people have a lot more reason to suspect that I may, in fact, be a fully fledged member of the aquatic kingdom. That's right, meet Lilu and Korali, the biggest talking points within my makeup collection - whenever I'm using them around people, they FREAK, and that's because they're the most adorable, unique and flexible brushes on the market.

Lilu - £17.99
To be honest, I fell in love with Lilu because she embodies everything that I love - the beautiful colour red and a heavily chiseled face. This brush is a true favourite for powder contour (which you guys know I LIVE for) due to the tapering on the brush and it's size - it does an amazing job on my cheeks and jawline. The handle is, contrary to what most people are probably thinking,  really comfortable to hold and gives you a lot more freedom of movement compared to other brushes - on occasions, where you'd usually bend your arm and reposition yourself, you can simply bend the brush for the same effect (if you're truly lazy like me, this is a godsend). You can also use Lilu for foundation too, making her the perfect addition to any makeup collector's stash - she's adaptable, effective and different, which is the key to my heart.

Korali - £17.99
Moving onto this stunner, here we have Korali (the only product here I photographed after usage, as my camera ran out of battery right at the end of my Unicorn Cosmetics photoshoot... bummer), the brush I've been generally gravitating towards for all of my powder needs lately. The main reason why this is a win for me is thanks to the positioning of the bristles - they're not too close together nor too sparse, meaning that, when desired, you can really press a setting powder into the skin as well as also, on the other end of the scale, being able to use it to apply the lightest tickle of blush. The wand is just as stunning as the previous - I think I'm going to need the rest of the mermaid collection in my life because, girl, I can't fault them.

UC Beauty Egg - £4.99
Since the original Beauty Blender, I feel like brands have found it harder and harder over the years to market similar tools; comparisons are instantly made and judgements instantly passed. However, I personally don't believe that every sponge has to be an exact carbon copy the Beauty Blender, which is why I was more than happy to give this one the time of day before writing it off like some larger influencers do when it comes to competing products, such as the well-known Real Techniques "Miracle Complexion" sponge.

As well as being a lovely shade of blue, this beauty egg has been doing a really efficient job on my foundation lately, as it blends out large areas of product fairly quickly (it's considerably larger than a Beauty Blender), getting the task done with a little more time to spare than usual. I don't actually dislike the fact that the texture of this is somewhat harder than what I'm used to with the BB as it means, just like with the cream dream brush, less product gets absorbed and more of the cake stays on my face. So, for the small price of £4.99, there's not a lot one can complain about, is there?

The Dirty B*tch - £4.99
Okay so, can we start by talking about this product name? I'm OBSESSED - I'm sure I'm not the only one that can admit to being a bit of a dirty b*tch in the past and being too slovenly when it came my brushes. However, times have changed and I'm no longer here for the unwanted germs that can gather on unwashed makeup tools - I own a couple of silicone brush cleaners that make the process easier for me. This one is no exception and has become the one that I'm using most frequently at the moment as heart-shaped objects, as a rule of thumb, tend to catch my eyes first and draw me towards them. That being said, The Dirty B*tch also has a 3 different sets of grooves and patterns suited to a variety of sizes - if you want squeaky clean brushes all round, this is the one you want to pick up.

Now, although I don't normally do lengthy conclusions as my overall opinion is normally crystal clear based on the individual product reviews, I just wanted to add that Unicorn Cosmetics is probably one of my favourite brands I've worked with on a collaborative basis and, as you guys know, there have been several cosmetic testing posts so far on my blog. It's been a long while since I've seen this level of sheer attention to detail, innovation and investment put into a range of products - Mel's love for beauty is completely transparent and the only thing that shines through when you look at and use anything from UC. Even the smaller elements (like the sturdy plastic boxes included within the interior of the lash boxes, the unicorn emblem printed on each ferrule, the holographic packaging, etc) can mean each makeup application feels that much more special and luxurious for the consumer, which is why almost everything here will be displayed on my dressing table rather than added to my regular drawers.

Thanks so much for reading another in-depth post; I'm especially proud of this one so I'm hoping it was just as enjoyable from you guys' perspectives! And, before I forget, Unicorn Cosmetics does have a crazy sale on currently so, if you like what you see, don't hesitate to go and check that sh*t out because now is the BEST time to order your goodies.

Have you heard of Unicorn Cosmetics? What do you think of the products featured today? Would you like to see more from them here?

    1. Awe Em - you've got to get on UC, their products are unreal and so innovative! Especially considering we're very similar taste wise, I know you'd love these! x

  42. This is such a fun filled post Marina. This brand looks so cute and pretty. Love those unicorn brushes. You are so true about the beauty sponges being compared with the beauty blender. These do work well. Lovely pictures Marina. :-)

    1. Hehe, thank you so much Via - I'm so happy you enjoyed the post, products and photography! I'm also glad to hear that you're with me on the BB comparaison topic - not every beauty sponge has to be exactly the same for it to be good as, although this one is larger and stiffer, it absolutely does the trick! x
