Different Hairstyles You Can Do With Clip In Hair Extensions

Hey guys! Now, today we're going to be switching things up a bit and reaching out to all of the short haired girls (and guys, of course) rocking clip in hair extensions on a regular basis - this one's for you.

Admittedly, I, despite LOVING my recent hair growth (these locks are shoulder length now, eek!) have been testing out and experimenting with clip in hair extensions for special occasions and, much to my surprise, there are actually so many possibilities when it comes down to styling that extra hair. You see, I’d always assumed that wearing hair extensions immediately meant that any elaborate or even simple updos were completely off limits, let alone braids and plaits but, as it turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong, hence why I thought it rather fitting that I share with you four stunning different hairstyles you can do with clip in hair extensions. So, if you’re either already weerrrrkking the hair extensions or intend to join the squad soon (I totally recommend!) then you’re going to want to have a read of this list.

The half-up ponytail
The half-up ponytail, made famous by the likes of Khloe Kardashian and Ariana Grande, is known for being a very adorable, “pretty” hairstyle – if you’re looking to embrace your girly side, this is the perfect hairstyle for you.

In order to recreate this look with your extensions, all you need to do is, firstly, take a chunk of the hair, scraping it from the front of your head, and either tie it into a tight bun or use a clip to keep it out of the way whilst you’re dealing with the remainder of the hair. At this point, you’re going to want to begin to incorporate the extensions, letting some of the natural hair fall in between each extension piece to give the end result more of a I-don't-have-extensions-in type of look. Once you’ve finished adding extensions (add as many pieces as you like, depending on how much va va voom you’re looking for), unleash the hair from the bun/clip and tie it into a nice high ponytail, almost at the top of your head; from here, it should blend in with the rest of the hair. And there you have it – an easy hairstyle that happens to be very cutesy indeed!

The side braid
As you can see from these red carpet snaps, both Nina Dobrev and Shay Mitchell are looking gorgeous and, let’s be honest, their side braids are the absolute stars of the show. Side braids generally tend to require a lot of volume, as you’re relying on just one side of the head to carry the entire hairstyle; that’s where the clip in extensions swoop in and save the day.

To begin, all you need to do is put all of your hair over either your left or your right shoulder (pick a shoulder, any shoulder...) and lift up the top half of the hair, securing it to the side with a clip or something of the sort. Now, take this opportunity to start working in your extensions – personally, due to the fact that you’re dealing with only half of your head, I would recommend adding, maximum, two to three 4-inch wefts but, by all means, if you’re feeling that Elsa and Anna vibe, go for as many as you like! As soon as you’re happy with the extensions, let down the hair in the clip and brush the entire ensemble together, keeping almost all of the hair on your chosen side of the head (bar a small strand from the front of the other side for style, as seen on Nina and Shay). Starting from the front, separate the hair into three large chunks and continue to plait until you have a long, Rapunzel-like braid! Finish the look by teasing the braid slightly with your fingers – this creates a more messy, chic look.

The classic ponytail
Now, I couldn’t help but include Ariana AGAIN for this one because, quite frankly, she’s known primarily for her high, thick ponytails that always appear nothing but sleek at events and in paparazzi photos. This ponytail can be easily replicated with the use of clip in hair extensions, especially as it adds that extra layer of volume that everyone’s looking for.

The first step is to form a “hypothetical” ponytail at the back of your head, holding it in place with your hands, just to get a feel for where you’re going to place the extensions. Following this, take the top layer of said hypothetical ponytail and, again, separate it from the rest using a clip - you can let go of the remaining hair at this point. Next, for a comfortable, ponytail that doesn’t appear rigid or artificial, I recommend clipping in your two 2-inch pieces (one next to the other) in the centre of the hair, just to add a little more thickness and BODY to the ponytail – that’s honestly all that’s required. Let down the hair contained within the clip and you’ll see that you’re left with a very natural ‘your hair but better’ result, which is then easily tied into a high ponytail, a regular ponytail or even a low ponytail. I recommend finishing simply by pinching and pulling the hair at the top and giving it a spritz with your favourite hairspray – this adds a little bit of volume and sophistication to an otherwise everyday updo.

The beachy waves
And last, but certainly not least, Blake Lively is KILLING it with her soft beach waves which are perfect during the Summer and Autumn months and, if you have some good quality clip in hair extensions made with human hair (if not, they may melt or burn) and a curling wand, you can achieve them too.

For clipping in your extensions, just follow the first tutorial for the half-up ponytail but, instead of tying up the previously separated chunk, let it go and brush it so that it merges naturally with the rest of the hair. Taking your curling wand, gradually curl medium sized chunks of hair until the entire head looks uniform, being careful not to make your curls too tightly packed (we're not looking for disco coils for this one). Once that's done, grab a paddle brush and gently go through the hair with it to loosen those waves and make them appear beach ready. You're done!

Isn't it just amazing that all of this can be possible with clip in hair extensions? There's no need to be afraid of rogue extensions falling out in front of everyone or clips that can be seen rather apparently through the hair - as long as you follow these methods and blend the two sets of hair together properly, you can really get the most out of your extensions. My favourite extensions are from a wonderful brand named Amazing Beauty Hair Extensions, founded in 2015, as they use TOP quality remy hair, have so many different styles and colours to choose from and offer free worldwide shipping! So if, after this post, you're looking to purchase any clip ins, let them be your first port of call.
