Greece - The Best and The Worst!

As some of you may know, I, recently, had the absolute pleasure of venturing out deep into the bowls of Europe and visiting Greece. This voyage was funded by my school for the Greek and Latin students (I'm a bit of a nerd to be honest) meaning that a lot of what we intended to look at was surrounding the Greeks and their history.

This trip was honestly a FANTASTIC experience for me (I don't do an awful lot of travelling so it was nice to finally go somewhere else other than the yard) and I discovered so much of the world that I didn't even know existed.

So, for todays blog post, I thought I'd just let my photos speak for themselves, demonstrating all of the good, the bad and the ugly that I witnessed whilst I was in Greece. I will included some captions and commentary as we go along so you guys can have a little bit of background to go with the images you're seeing. All photos were taken by me, myself and I, using my cellular device (I.e my flimsy mobile phone) so I apologise if the picture quality isn't what it normally is.

The Best:

It's very clear to see that, from the top of this hill, the view of the landscape is stunning and the sky never fails to be blue.

I know ruins can sometimes be a tad tedious but it was a lovely day so it kind of made up for it!

Yes, we're in the geeky class therefore we do have quite a thing for Ancient Greek amphitheatres. I wouldn't call it a fetish just yet but it's definitely a "thing". No but, in all seriousness, standing in the same spot as Alexander The Great was quite overwhelming.

Two words: ABSOLUTE GENIUS. Pretty much all of the food that I had the pleasure of devouring in Greece was the same, but there was always a delicious barbeque flavour running through every dish. And I LOVE barbeque.

The highlight of the trip was this very moment here; standing at the very top of a mountain was like nothing I'd ever experienced. All I could do was sit back and gaze in mute amazement (seriously, the first time I've ever been speechless in my whole life was up here)

Unfortunately, we didn't get to sail on this beautiful lake but seeing it from afar was enough to satisfy me. Okay, no it wasn't but I can't sulk about it forever so...

A part of the Arc de Triomphe!

As you can see, Greece is, without a shadow of a doubt, a stunning location with blue skies and a PLETHORA of amazing opportunities for everyone. There were definitely more positives than negatives here.

The Worst:
Okay, so these scenes I'm about to show you have qualified for this section because they are just DOWNRIGHT ugly.

Sorry for the awkwardness of the photo (This guy is clearly very comfortable in front of the camera; he made himself right at home) but Greece definitely has a stray dog problem. This was the first of many I saw throughout the trip and it hurt my heart rather a lot to see the abandoned hounds.

I really hope that the hotel staff see this because this needs to be addressed. No, we're not a rich school and we couldn't afford the best of the best but something with a more pleasant view would have been favourable.

You might be thinking: "What's ugly about this photo; all we're seeing is a beautiful Greek Aqueduct!"
Well, think again, because if you take a look at the car in the front, you'll realise that it's parked. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! Outrageous...
Clearly, Greece still has a few problems that do need to be resolved and ASAP. (Especially the parking one. That could cost LIVES people!)

However, those faults could never take away from the experience I had and seem pretty minor when I reflect on all of the monuments and scenic sites that I had the privilege of visiting. Greece, though already dearly missed, I bid you and all of your wonders farewell. (You guys don't even realise how hard it was for me to leave. Literally, I was borderline CRYING. I'm a wimp, I know.)

I really hope you guys had as much fun reading this as I did compiling my best and worst photos from my holiday; I love travel writing so this was a rare treat!

Where did you last go on holiday and what did you get up to? Let me know in the comments section of this post and, as usual, please follow this blog for more enticing content just like this!

Until next time,

  2. I went to Greece almost a couple years ago, and it is so far by favorite trip. I love how it is so rich in culture. I do agree it still has its issues, but never the less a beautiful place.

  6. I enjoyed reading your travel blog immensely Marina. Such fluidity, subtle humour and individuality. I was left feeling desperate to hear more about your interactions with Greek people and other students etc. Greece is already looking so bright and sunny in February. What must it be like in Summer!

Yes, thanks very much for that request; next time I do anything travel related, I will include some interactions! Well, the funny ones obviously! x I'm going to have to go back there within Summer at some point, but how can the sky get any bluer?

  9. I feel like Greece is just like Madeira (Portugal where my family are from) in terms of the stray animal problem because it breaks my heart to see animals treated like that. Still Greece has highlights like its history and culture x

    1. Thanks so much for visiting this post Ana - Greece is the foundation of all life as we know it, so we have to give it some credit there. x But yes, I love animals and for them to be left out to die like that really does put a dent in the trip. x

  10. I was scrolling down to see the worst part of Greece :) It never crossed my mind that there is something bad there but you are totally right they do need to take care of stray dogs.

    1. Awfully sorry that I've only just managed to see this comment - before going, I didn't think there were any negatives either, however, it was definitely a real shame to see so many strays in one small area! xx

  11. I loved traveling to Greece! I decided to go in winter, which was great! I am Canadian so 15 degrees to me is beach weather. The only problem I ran into was that I got stuck on an island because the ferry's stopped running over Christmas. And I agree that Greek driving can be a unique experience. My favorite memory was witnessing a car deciding to travel the wrong way on a one-way street into about 4 lanes of on coming traffic. I was surprised no one got hurt.
